Ferrington Vineyard

Our Chardonnay comes from the Ferrington Vineyard, which was first planted in the late 1960s. It has a gentle south-facing slope, and has decomposed sandstone and clay soils with three to four feet of topsoil. Wineries sharing this site include William Selyem, Copain, Flowers, and Littorai.

We ferment with native yeast in 30% new French oak, 70% neutral French oak.  The wine is never stirred, and ages on its fine lees for 12 months before bottling.

The  2013 Chardonnay from this vineyard has beautiful purity and focus. The aromatics give way to white flowers, lemon oil, crushed rocks, and honey is enticing. There is beautiful bright acidity, and envelopes the palate with flavors of peach, apricot skin, pear, quince and citrus. High-toned floral and stone fruit notes add lift on the linear, lengthy finish.

“2013 Poe Vineyards “Ferrington Vineyard” Chardonnay (Anderson Valley)

The 2013 Poe Vineyards “Ferrington Vineyard” is really a beautiful bottle of low octane, pure and classy chardonnay. The superb nose delivers a complex mix of delicious apple, white peach, gentle notes of acacia and lemon blossoms, delicate leesy tones, salty soil and a discreet framing of buttery oak. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied, crisp and complex, with a superb core of fruit, bright acids, impeccably focus and grip and a long, vibrant finish. This is really a refined bottle of chardonnay that reminds me a bit of the wines Mike Grgich was making back in his heyday in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s. 2015-2020+. 93.” Gilman

Manchester Ridge

Manchester Ridge sits at a 2,000 foot elevation above Anderson Valley. The vineyard is 400 feet above the fog line. We picked this vineyard nearly a month later than the Pinot Noir vineyards lying in the valley below. Because of this long hang time, the vineyard develops complex flavors and nuances. The cool steady temperatures allows the grapes to maintain acidity, while the forest of surrounding pine trees seem to impart earthy aromas.

Our 2013 Manchester Ridge Pinot was fermented with 20% whole cluster and native yeast.  We foot tread the fermentation two to three times per day, andlet the temperature rise naturally. It was aged in 30% new French oak barrels, and 70% neutral French oak barrels.

The Manchester Ridge is earthy and wild.  There is an explosive array of aromatics including pine trees, earth, fresh herbs, flowers, pie spice and berries. On the palate is dark red cherry, rhubarb, plum, spice, with a freshness and structured acidity.  The finish is long and generous.  The 20% whole cluster gives the wine incredible complexity and hits of fresh herbs that would be picked for the kitchen.  Smelling this wine immediately takes me to the vineyard, high in the forest in the hills of Mendocino.

“2013 Poe Vineyards “Manchester Ridge Vineyard” Pinot Noir (Mendocino Ridge)

The 2013 Manchester Ridge Vineyard bottling of pinot noir from Samantha Sheehan’s Poe Vineyards is really a very pretty and stylish bottle of young pinot, wafting from the glass in a complex aromatic constellation of black cherries, plums, fresh Mendocino herb tones, a touch of gamebird, dark soil tones and a discreet framing of nutty oak. On the palate the wine is medium-full, tangy and fairly primary in personality, with a plush attack, fine core, modest tannins, bright acids and fine length and grip on the focused and nascently complex finish. This is going to be an excellent bottle of pinot, but I would tuck it away in the cellar for a few years and let it start to show some of its secondary layers of complexity. It is eminently drinkable right out of the blocks, but it is still a baby and really deserves some time in the cellar to stretch its wings! High class juice. 2015-2035+. 91+.” John Gilman

Olcese Vineyard

The vineyard is just northwest of Sonoma Square. It was planted in 1974, the training is California sprawl, and it is dry farmed.  The clone is all Martini.  The soil is clay loam.

From this vineyard we make our Pinot Nouveau. We place the whole clusters into a portable fermentor and seal the lid for seven weeks. In absence of oxygen, the grapes undergo carbonic fermentation and malolactic at the same time. We then press the grapes and go to barrel for one week. We then hand bottle without any sulfur as the wine is to be consumed within the next two to three months.

The resulting wine is delicate and fruity. Beautiful notes of wild strawberry, it is simply delicious.
